You're all probably getting tired of hearing me say this, but... I really need to stop being such a procrastinator and update my gallery more often. I need to just plain draw more often, actually.

ANYWHO... I was talking with ~DarkPhazon395 last night about SMB2 and how I used to always rent it from a nearby grocery store when I was a little kid, like, every other weekend (as I never owned the game for the longest time... I even owned both SMB3 and SMW before I ever owned this game). And ya, as I kept trying to figure out what I wanted to draw, I eventually settled on this. Dunno why I decided to give them all new duds, but... eh, I guess it keeps things fresh.

SMB2 was my favorite for a loooong time. Always played as Princess for her hover/flight, a lot of the totally awesome baddies that I love so much came from this installment: Ninjis, Porcupos, Shy-guys, heh, even that little fucker who's flying carpet I'd steal and ride around on...

classic Love. good job here. =)

Thanks. :D

And ya, SMB2 is pretty awesome. It's a shame that a lot of people don't think so, though, since it's very different from a lot of other Mario games. It's still one of my favorite Mario games, though. :)

The reason for the difference, I believe, is this:

With Super Mario Bro. and Legend of Zelda actually, Nintendo didn't quite anticipate the absolutely insane popularity of the actual format of these original installments.

Which is why, after sequel installments for both games were released, both of which (SMB2 and LoZ2: Adventures of Link) featured a different style of gameplay (SMB2 was still side-scrolling, yes, but that was about it), they returned to and stayed with the original styles/formats and even storylines (you'll notice no more Wart after SMB2) that made the originals so popular.

I think they realized the awesomeness they'd already created and went back to what already worked.

That's my theory, anyway. ;)

Well, that might be the case with LoZ, but actually, the reason SMB2 is so different is because it originally wasn't a Mario game. See, what we know of as "Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels" was actually called "Super Mario Bros. 2" in Japan. We never got that game until Super Mario All-Stars, though. The reason is because Nintendo of America thought the game was both too hard and too similar to SMB1. So, in 1988, they took another Nintendo game, known as "Doki Doki Panic", and replaced the playable characters with SMB characters, and then called it "Super Mario Bros. 2". Still, despite originally not being a Mario game, it WAS a game made by Shigeru Miyamoto. "Doki Doki Panic" was a game that Miyamoto made in commemoration of the Fuji TV Festival, and the protagonists of the game are the mascots of the festival. All the enemy characters, though, were created by Nintendo for the game, so even if the playable characters weren't owned by Nintendo, everything else from the game was. Interestingly enough, in 1992 Japan even saw a rerelease of the game with the changes the U.S. had, only since they already had an SMB2, they called this release "Super Mario USA".

But, ya, long-story short: SMB2 was so different because it originally wasn't a Mario game (and I think this is the reason why so many people don't hold it in such high regard, sadly), but despite that, it's still very much a Mario game now, and has GREATLY influenced the series. It's too bad we haven't seen Wart again, though... well, except for a cameo in Link's Awakening (and that game had cameos from several Mario enemies, too).
